Meta Muse Explained: What Meta's New AI Agent Means for Your Business

Updated September 30, 2026

For the last few years, "AI" mostly meant chatbots: you ask a question, you get an answer. In September 2026, Meta launched something that goes a step further. Muse doesn't just answer. It does things for you: it books appointments, fills out forms, compares prices and even calls customer service.

It went to the top of the US app charts within weeks, Meta's stock climbed roughly 25% in September, and yesterday Meta released a version built for small businesses.

Here's what Muse is, how it works, what it costs, where the concerns are, and, most importantly, what it means for business owners like you, even if you're not in the US.

What is Meta Muse?

Muse is a personal AI agent from Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. It launched on September 8, 2026.

The difference between a chatbot and an agent is simple:

  • A chatbot tells you how to book a table.
  • An agent books the table for you.

You talk to Muse the way you'd message a friend, either in the Muse app or directly inside WhatsApp. You tell it what you need done, and it goes and does it.

It's powered by Muse Spark, which Meta calls its most capable AI model so far, built specifically for this kind of real-world, multi-step work.

What can Muse actually do?

According to Meta and early users, Muse can:

  • Handle errands online: browse websites, fill in forms and book appointments on your behalf
  • Manage everyday admin: sort email, book dinners, track budgets and find deals, asking for your approval before acting
  • Shop: compare prices, watch for price drops and buy things through partners like Shopify and Stripe
  • Take on a whole task: do the research, comparisons and back-and-forth, then finish the booking
  • Keep working after you close the app and report back when it's done

Early users have shared some impressive examples: Muse tracking down and cancelling forgotten subscriptions, negotiating a lower internet bill, handling product returns and sorting out unpaid parking tickets.

It connects to the apps you choose, such as email, calendar, payments, health apps and Instagram. If a service doesn't have a ready-made connection but has a public API, Muse can build its own connector. If there's no API at all, it simply uses a web browser, like a person would.

How does it work under the hood?

This is the part that makes Muse different from most AI assistants.

Every user gets their own computer in the cloud. Meta calls it the Muse Secure VM, a dedicated virtual machine with its own browser where your agent lives and works. You can even watch what it's doing in real time.

A few other design choices worth knowing:

  • A second "guard" agent. A separate agent called Sentinel has to approve actions before they go out to the internet.
  • An activity log. Muse records what it did, and you can revoke any app's access at any time.
  • No ads inside Muse. Meta says your Muse conversations aren't shared with its advertising systems.
  • Stronger encryption is coming. Later this year, Meta plans a Confidential VM where your data is encrypted with a key only you hold, so even Meta can't read it.

How much does Meta Muse cost?

Muse uses a simple three-tier model:

PlanPriceWho it's for
Free$0 (weekly usage limit)Most everyday tasks
Power$20/monthHeavier users
Maximum$100/monthPower users running lots of tasks

Usage is measured weekly. Meta says the free tier covers most of what people need.

Where is Muse available?

Right now, only in the US and Canada, and only for adults (18+). You can use it on iOS, Android, Mac, the web at muse.ai, and in WhatsApp.

Meta says more countries are coming but hasn't named any or given dates. It's not available in India yet.

What's new: Muse Charm, smart glasses and Muse for Small Business

Meta is moving fast. In just three weeks:

  • At Meta Connect (September 23), Mark Zuckerberg called Muse the centerpiece of Meta's AI strategy. He unveiled Muse Charm, a small keychain-sized device for talking to Muse without your phone, and announced that Muse is coming to Meta's AI glasses in the coming months.
  • On September 29, Meta launched Muse for Small Business. It connects Muse to tools businesses already use, such as Shopify, QuickBooks, Canva, Slack, Zoom, Stripe, Asana, Dropbox, Figma, Klaviyo and HighLevel, as well as Facebook and Instagram business accounts and Meta ad accounts.

The business version is designed to learn what you sell, how your brand talks and what customers ask about most. Then it can help review your books, draft a campaign or check your online store. It's free with usage limits.

Meta says around 200 million small businesses already use its apps, which gives it a big head start.

The concerns: privacy and trust

An agent that can read your email and spend your money deserves healthy skepticism.

  • Privacy questions are real. A reporter at Inc. found that the Muse app on Mac synced his local private messages as a data source, which he says he never asked it to do. Privacy experts have raised similar concerns.
  • Agents make mistakes. Meta itself says Muse can get things wrong and can be targeted by prompt injection, where hidden instructions on a website try to trick the AI.
  • The business model is still developing. Analysts are watching whether people will trust Muse with important tasks and pay for it over time.

My advice: if you use Muse or any AI agent, connect only the apps it genuinely needs, keep approvals on for payments and anything important, and check the activity log now and then.

What this means for your business (even in India)

This is the part I care about most, because it affects every business owner I work with.

Until now, customers found you on Google, looked at your website, then called or messaged you. With agents like Muse, a growing share of "customers" searching, comparing and booking will be AI agents acting for real people.

Muse isn't in India yet, but it already works inside WhatsApp, the app your customers already use every day. When it (or a competitor's agent) arrives here, businesses that are easy for an AI to understand and book will win.

Here's how to get ready now:

  1. Have a real website, not just a Facebook page. An agent needs a clear, reliable place to read about your services, prices, location and hours. Social pages alone are hard for it to use.
  2. Put the important information in plain text. Services, prices, timings, address and phone number should be written clearly on the page, not hidden inside images or posters.
  3. Make yourself bookable. If an agent can book an appointment or a table online, it will pick you over a business where it has to call and wait.
  4. Set up WhatsApp Business properly, with your catalogue, business hours, quick replies and accurate details.
  5. Keep your info consistent everywhere. Your website, Google Business Profile, Instagram and Facebook should all say the same thing.
  6. Make your site fast and well structured. Clean code and proper structure help search engines today and AI agents tomorrow.

The good news: everything above also helps you get more customers right now, from Google and from real people. The agent wave just makes it essential sooner.

Final thoughts

Meta Muse is one of the clearest signs yet that AI is moving from talking to doing. It's still early: it's limited to two countries, has open privacy questions, and depends on AI that can still make mistakes. But Meta has billions of users, WhatsApp and 200 million small businesses on its platforms. When Meta goes all in on something, it tends to reach everyone eventually.

The businesses that prepare now, with a clear website, easy booking and accurate information, will be the ones AI agents recommend.
